Two grading scales

Cambridge IGCSE subjects are usually graded A* (highest) to G (lowest). Many also have a separate 9 to 1 version with its own syllabus code, for example Mathematics 0580 (A* to G) and 0980 (9 to 1). The content and papers are the same; only the grading differs. Cambridge offers 9 to 1 grading to schools in certain regions, and a candidate cannot take both versions in the same series.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subjects are graded 9 (highest) to 1. In Maths A, for example, Foundation tier offers grades 5 to 1, and Higher tier offers 9 to 4, with grade 3 allowed.

Below the lowest grade is U (ungraded).

How 9 to 1 lines up with A* to G

Cambridge sets three fixed anchor points: "The standards at the thresholds of grades 7, 4 and 1 are the same as the standards at the thresholds of grades A, C and G."

9 to 1A* to GWhat Cambridge says
7ASame standard at the start of the grade
4CSame standard at the start of the grade
1GSame standard at the start of the grade
9, 8, 6, 5, 3, 2No direct matchBoundaries set between the anchor points; grade 9 is set separately

Cambridge sets the boundaries for 8, 6, 5, 3 and 2 at regular intervals between the boundaries for 9, 7, 4 and 1. Grade 9 is set using statistical and expert evidence.

Core and Extended (Cambridge)

Many Cambridge subjects have two levels. Which one you sit sets the range of grades available to you:

  • Mathematics 0580: Core, grades C to G. Extended, grades A* to E.
  • Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625: Core, grades C to G. Extended, grades A* to G.

If you are aiming above a C, you need Extended. See each subject guide for the papers on each route.

Common questions

Is a grade 4 the same as a C?

Cambridge says the standard at the start of grade 4 is the same as the standard at the start of grade C. Some universities and colleges ask for a 5 where they would have asked for a C, so check the exact requirement for any course you are applying to.

Is a 7 the same as an A?

Cambridge says the standard at the start of grade 7 is the same as at the start of grade A.

What is the highest grade I can get on Core?

For Cambridge Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Core candidates can get up to grade C. Extended opens the higher grades.
